Journal articles need publication-level detail

For an IEEE journal citation, separate the article title from the journal title. Record volume, issue, page range or article identifier, publication date, and DOI as available. The reference style distinguishes an article from the larger serial that contains it. Do not put the journal name in the article-title field, or combine the volume and issue into one value. Separate fields let the style apply punctuation in the appropriate places.

A useful real record for checking journal metadata is Claude E. Shannon’s “A Mathematical Theory of Communication,” published in the Bell System Technical Journal in 1948. The first installment has DOI 10.1002/j.1538-7305.1948.tb01338.x. Looking up that DOI should identify the work rather than an unrelated book with a similar title. Always compare the returned title, author, journal, volume, issue, and pages against the publisher’s record before submitting your reference.

Conference papers and reports are different sources

Conference proceedings are common in engineering and computing, but an event name and a proceedings title are not always identical. Enter the paper title, proceedings title, conference name where relevant, authors, year, and page range. A paper presented at an event may have a different publication history from a later journal version. Cite the version you actually read and avoid merging metadata from both records into a single reference.

A technical report may instead be issued by a laboratory, company, standards body, or government agency. Enter its organization and report number when known. A report hosted online does not become a generic website citation simply because you obtained it through a browser. Selecting Report gives the IEEE reference generator a more appropriate source model. Leave missing elements blank and check unusual publication types against the official reference guidance.

Website citations and access dates

An IEEE website citation should lead readers to the actual content, not merely to a search-results page. Use a named author or responsible organization where supplied, the page title, the website or publication name, the available date, and the complete URL. An access date records when you consulted online material; it does not replace the page’s own publication date. These dates answer different questions and belong in different fields.

The URL entry option deliberately does not scrape arbitrary websites. It adds the address and lets you enter the details from the page. That avoids silently substituting a browser title, footer date, or guessed author for the bibliographic record. Public metadata lookup is available for DOIs, ISBNs, and titles, but manual entry remains dependable when a website blocks extraction or provides no useful structured information.

Revise your list when the draft changes

Use the arrow controls to reorder saved references until they match first citation in your manuscript. Removing an entry closes the numbering gap in the displayed bibliography. Reordering can change every later number, so update corresponding citations in your writing as well. This browser tool does not edit an already-open Word document automatically. Keeping a final reference-number check on your revision checklist prevents a polished-looking list from pointing to the wrong sources.

Duplicate detection reuses an existing saved record when its identifying details match. If you imported the same work twice with different spelling or incomplete fields, compare the records yourself and retain one correct version. The quick numeric citation tool can format a number and locator, but it does not know your manuscript’s complete citation sequence. The full bibliography is the better place to manage order.

Export clean references and verify the details

Copy a single reference for a short document or export the whole IEEE numbered references list for a larger project. Word preserves supported typography and hanging indents. Plain text is broadly portable, while RIS transfers structured source records to compatible reference managers. Check the receiving application after import: data exchange formats and word processors do not all interpret every publication field in the same way.

Consult the IEEE reference guide and your target publication’s instructions when a record has unusual authorship, publication status, or pagination. This IEEE citation maker uses a CSL style, but the accuracy of the source metadata still matters. Review the current journal guidance instead of assuming every engineering publisher follows identical abbreviations or house conventions.

Keep each assignment’s style separate

A numbered engineering paper and an author–date social-science paper organize evidence differently. If you need an APA 7 reference list, create it in the dedicated generator rather than replacing bracketed numbers with names manually. The MLA in-text formatter handles author–page citations for humanities work, while the MLA heading formatter addresses the physical first page. Choosing the right tool at the start reduces corrections at the end.
